Taking Care Of Business

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

“I live off Bloody Marys, they give you fire. I get up in the morning and go right to the bar. Yes, I lose my appetite touring”. Thus spoke the Texas Cannonball Freddie King, living to the ripe old age of 42. Fortunately for generations of guitarists to come including Eric Clapton (whom he toured with), Mick Taylor, Peter Green, Stevie Ray Vaughn and his brother Jimmy (who used to bill himself as “Freddie King Jr.”), Freddie made a ton of recordings. Sharing a last name (but no blood relation) with B.B. and Albert, Freddie’s style was unique and helped forge the blues/rock phenomenon of the 60’s and 70’s. The German record label Bear Family has just released a massive 7-Disc box set of his legacy, dating from the late 50’s until 1973. Live gems, alternate takes and some of the best blues or rock guitar licks you’ve ever heard are included, along with a hardbound photo essay by Bill Dahl. Find out why Grand Funk Railroad paid homage to him in their million-seller “We’re An American Band” or, better yet, sit down and spend some quality time with Freddie.

Casey and Shawn in an ice palace

Really really really. If you don’t remember le grand White Hinterland, their last album “Phylactery Factory” came out in 2008 and featured a lot of boring piano-based songs sprinkled with a few gigantic gems (“Napoleon at Waterloo” and “Dreaming of the Plum Trees” are so overly gorgeous that it makes the whole album close to incredible). So histories aside, WH came out with a new album this month: “Kairos”. It’s shockingly better than the last album. Lead singer Casey’s voice is similar to Lykke Li’s, and the music is a crystalline ice palace of electronic beats and Casey singing like bird-meets-wind.

Finally! A New Hendrix Release

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Although he only completed three studio albums before his passing, Jimi Hendrix was a prolific recorder. After decades of legal entanglements, his estate is releasing new live and studio music from the guitar master and will do so for many years to come. Promised in the near future: the historic sessions done with Stephen Stills. Now available: Valleys of Neptune, a mix of unreleased studio versions of familiar songs (Hear My Train A Comin’, Sunshine of Your Love, etc.) and new tunes (Mr. Bad Luck, Crying Blue Rain, etc.). Hendrix fans couldn’t be happier. KZSC is offering copies of the new Jimi Hendrix CD as a thank you gift on our website and during our pledge drive. Friday artist profile program, “Block of Bliss” will spotlight Hendrix on March 12th at 5 pm. Rock on Jimi!
