His name was Lincoln, but most of the music world knew him as Sugar. Starting a recording career in the late 1960’s as part of The African Brothers band, Sugar Minott became popular as a solo artist in Jamaica during the mid-70’s. Sugar was an early pioneer of reggae’s dance hall sound; he developed a talent for writing new songs to fit over existing rhythms (which at the time was common when singers performed live but rare in the studio), often proving more popular than the original songs. His career skyrocketed in the U.K. and the U.S. after the release of “Herbman Hustling” in the early 80’s. Sugar focused his fame (and money) into championing up and coming talent through his Youth Promotion sound system. Decades later, he was still recording and touring around the world.

One of KZSC’s newest shows is The Rising Tide on Friday nights (8:30pm – 10:30pm), helmed by DJ PassiveTheory is bringing to the airwaves the kind of local musicians and voices that need to be heard!

Grand Lake
This Friday night, the San Francisco-by-way-of-Berkeley indie rock trio GRAND LAKE will be KZSC’s guests live on The Rising Tide! We’ll learn a little about this promising new act, talk about their upcoming show at the Crepe Place, on January 24th, where they’ll be opening for Maus Haus (more information, including ticket prices, available on the Crepe Place’s website, here). The trio is in the midst of promoting their Louise EP, a four-track recording featuring Silver Jews and Port O’Brien covers, and live on The Rising Tide the group will perform a number of songs off this EP and the rest of their songwriting playbook in what will surely be an intimate affair with an burgeoning musical talent!

How to perform outdoors
This past Sunday was an exciting day for a few of us music-loving adventurers. There was an outdoor afternoon show at the Crystal Palace (our friends listed in the title) followed by a ridiculously fun show at the RC4NV (Ty Segall, Green Flash and Hermit Convention). Tromping through town with a musical suntan is just the right thing for the end of summer.

Today was a historic day at KZSC: we named our first “Big Cheese” Best Programmer of the Month Award. To commemorate his achievements, he was given a fabulous “Jar o’ Cheese”. He’s very, very pleased.
