Lofi indie rock trio TV Girl received a warm Santa Cruzian welcome last Friday at the sold-out Catalyst’s Atrium stage. The show marks the group’s return to Santa Cruz after six years and three albums, having played the Catalyst in 2013 to promote their EP Lonely Women. Following an opening performance from energetic eletronica persona George Clanton, Friday’s set included the band’s most popular songs from their debut record French Exit (2014) as well as tracks from their newest album Death of a Party Girl (2018), an Elvis Depressedly cover and a dispassionate monologue from vocalist Brad Petering bemoaning the banality of modern romance. Of their set, TV Girl tweeted “The last time we played Santa Cruz, 7 people came. Tonight we get our sweet revenge with a sold out show at the very same venue!” Although their music explores themes of melancholia, lugubriousness and ennui Santa Cruz showed heaps of love to this sublime trio.
