The artist formerly known as Baby Jesus is making a big splash with his debut project, Baby on Baby. DaBaby is from North Carolina, which has produced a number of successful hip-hop artists and producers, such as J. Cole, Jermaine Dupri, 9th Wonder, Phonte, and Rapsody. Although he is relatively new, he has already received cosigns from Boosie Badazz and Yo Gotti. Furthermore, fellow rappers Offset, Rich Homie Quan, and Rich the Kid offer guest verses on the record.
Despite its relatively modest runtime of 32 minutes in thirteen tracks, DaBaby wastes no time kicking off the project with a bang, with the energetic ‘Taking It Out’. It is immediately clear that this album is going to be different than the standard trap albums being pushed out like a factory line these days. One thing that makes DaBaby stand out his delivery and flow, which is confident and rapid fast. He also has a penchant for melody, doing a majority of the catchy hooks and refrains on the record.
The North Carolina rapper taps a variety of producers for the album, and it pays off. The album features a diverse, yet consistent trap sound which is all tied together by DaBaby’s signature voice, which rides over the beat like he’s been doing this for years. Moreover, his rapper tag, “That ain’t DaBaby, that’s my baby” is distinct but simple.
Unfortunately, the album takes a slight dip in quality around the halfway mark. Some songs just feel too short and underdeveloped, while others are bogged down by lackluster features. Thankfully, DaBaby doesn’t let the project end on a bad note, with ‘Walker Texas Ranger’, which is a nod to his Southern roots, complete with a music video where he pays homage to the TV show of the same name.
North Carolina rapper DaBaby releases an explosive debut project, and proves that he needs more ears on him, and fast.
