Pamela Valfer, the ‘Queen Kitty’ of Kitty Craft, finished off the month of March with a wonderful show at the Catalyst’s Atrium, with lor2mg as her opener.

Kitty Craft’s Visit to KZSC

Before the show, Pamela and the band came to visit KZSC, took a tour of the station, and sat down for an interview with DJ Key, DJ Shove It, and more. After recording a quick station ID, we realized we had time for a quick spontaneous interview! We got the chance to learn a bit about Kitty Craft’s adorable album art, her favorite places to play shows, and her creative process with her visual art, along with her music.

Here is the interview!

Lastly, we were able to get some of our station’s libraries copies of some Kitty Craft CDs signed and snapped a group photo of our DJs meeting Kitty Craft!

The Show at the Catalyst

Pamela Valfer was on vocals and guitar with Carrie Hansen, on vocals, and Christopher Reyne, on guitar, creating an iconic sound that’s fun and nostalgic. The renowned Kitty Craft sound is characterized by upbeat mixed samples and beats, unexpected but complementary dissonant background harmony, and lo-fi electronic feel.

Although she was touring and putting out music until around 2004, the music Kitty Craft was recording was only put onto streaming platforms in 2019 and has since generated a new family of fans.

The band played “Androgynous”, a cover of the beautiful The Replacements, in honor of the concert falling on Trans Visibility Day. As an encore, Kitty Craft gave us a second play of “Alright” and “Par 5”. The band was having so much fun, so much that Pamela told the audience, “I can’t quit you, Santa Cruz”.

At the end of the show, the band stayed back to talk with some fans, sign autographs, and answer some questions. We got the chance to talk to them, and Pamela talked about coming back to Santa Cruz soon, potentially even participating in a KZSC “tiny couch concert”.

We had a lovely time at the show, thank you to Kitty Craft for being so kind to KZSC and taking the time to talk with us! What talented kind-hearted people.
